n 1958, photographer Art Kane took one of the most iconic photos in jazz history. Gathering 58 of New York City’s jazz musicians together for a group photo, the image features jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Thelonius Monk, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Count Basie, Benny Golson, and more.
On May 2, 2019, in conjunction with the release of the book Art Kane: Harlem 1958, published by Wall of Sound Editions, the GRAMMY Museum welcomed musician, photographer, and son of Art Kane, Jonathan Kane, along with legendary jazz musician Benny Golson (who appears in the photo himself), to discuss the iconic photo and new book about its history.
