As part of the GRAMMY Museum’s Programs At Home series on COLLECTION:live, the GRAMMY Museum is thrilled to host a panel discussion about the making of the Shanghai Symphony’s recording of Gustav Mahler’s symphonic song cycle Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth). Panelists include Gustav Mahler's granddaughter Marina Mahler, conductor Maestro Long Yu, the President of the Shanghai Symphony Fedina Zhou, the composer of the world premiere work for this project Xiagang Ye, Dean of German Department at Peking University Liao Yu Huang, and Elliott Forrest from New York City's WQXR, who will moderate the conversation.
Gustav Mahler’s symphonic song cycle Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) is based on German translations of seven ancient Chinese poems. On the Shanghai Symphony’s recent recording, Mahler’s song cycle is paired with a world premiere recording of Xiaogang Ye’s settings of the same texts in the original Mandarin. Panelists discuss Gustav Mahler, the inspiration for this recording project, and the huge undertaking of recording a symphonic vocal work during the height of COVID-19.
